Grade 6 Curriculum

Hebrew

The DARKONIM Program introduced in the previous year will continue with more advanced learning skills reinforced in Hebrew reading, grammar and conversations. The students will be expected to write short 5-10 line summaries, use the dictionary and read fairly fluently and clearly, and acquire richer vocabulary.

Yiddishkeit

Greater appreciation of Yiddish culture and improvements of Yiddish language skills will continue with oral games, plays and songs. They will learn numbers 1-100, selected present tense verbs, food and restaurant vocabulary, days of the week, colours, members of the family, holiday songs and rudimentary phrase and short sentences readings.

Traditions

An in-depth studies of the calendar, languages and festivals of Jews around the world, as well as origins and present day meanings of Jewish customs will be continued. Key elements will include Jewish education, history of conversion, marriages and families and Jewish choices as they developed over time. In synagogue skills segment the required skills for Bar/Bat Mitzvah services are introduced with a comprehensive review of its historical and cultural roots to current practices . A research paper presented orally and in writing on selected famous Jewish men or women will be expected.

History

The students will continue with the history material started the previous year and will proceed from the Ancient world to the end of the 1 8th century. Focus will be placed on understanding events in Jewish History in the context of the history of western civilization . The survey will also include the perspectives of the different streams of Judaism. A "Travel Brochure" will be created by the students as a learning tool in an effort to help present day folks identify what to expect when visiting the past on a "time-travel".
