Hebrew

The new Darkonim program will be introduced at this level this year and the units will be followed. Progress in reading , conversation and grammar will be stressed and monitored as well as writing skills. Students will be expected to review and comprehend the materials presented at their level.

Traditions

More in-depth examinations of the Jewish traditions and ritual practices will be studied. Comparisons of different global customs will be surveyed and reviewed and life cycle milestones will be explored from current perspectives. The Synagogue skills unit will be learned with the introduction of the notions of prayer and its meanings via a comprehensive workbook with emphasis placed on Shabbat services. A research paper written and orally presented on selected famous Jewish men or women will be expected.

Yiddishkeit

This course will introduce the Yiddish language and rich culture with the use of stories, poems and songs. The Yiddish alphabet and vowels will be taught and compared with the Hebrew alphabet. Skills in early and basic translations of common expressions, days of the week, colours ,and numbers will be encouraged via story reading and singing materials pertinent to the calendar.

History

This subject will cover the Jewish historic periods from the early Diaspora to the early 20th century. The emphasis will be on evaluating the quality of Jewish life and its emerging impacts on its own culture in relations to the times. A survey of Jewish survival, which to a large measure depended on loyalty to Jewish roots and values, will also be the focus.
